According to Human Rights Watch, Zimbabwe is a tier two, source, transit, and destination country for men, women, and children trafficked for the purposes of forced labor and sexual exploitation; large scale migration of Zimbabweans to surrounding countries - as they flee a progressively more desperate situation at home - has increased; rural Zimbabwean men, women, and children are trafficked internally to farms for agricultural labor and domestic servitude and to cities for domestic labor and commercial sexual exploitation; young men and boys are trafficked to South Africa for farm work, often laboring for months in South Africa without pay before "employers" have them arrested and deported as illegal immigrants; young women and girls are lured abroad with false employment offers that result in involuntary domestic servitude or commercial sexual exploitation; men, women, and children from neighboring states are trafficked through Zimbabwe en route to South Africa tier rating.

ENVIRONMENT

Problems include: air pollution and resulting acid rain in the mineral extraction and refining region, chemical runoff into watersheds as well as deforestation and desertification. There is a significant lack of adequate water treatment, which presents health risks nationwide.

HUMAN RIGHTS

Zimbabwe’s political regime has engaged in systematic killing and intimidation of its political opposition. Zimbabwe is currently Africa’s most economically destitute country with inflation projected at millions of percent per year. As a result, there is no food in the country, no goods on the shelves and the population is starving and threatened with large-scale famine. PRESS FREEDOM

Zimbabwe has a very active press but it is subject to violent protests by organized gangs operating on behalf of the government. Robert Mugabe continues to cling to power through repression on many fronts, not the least of which is the press. He is aided in this by the passage of an Official Secrets Act and a draconian Defamation law. Prosecutions take place constantly to muzzle the press, radio and TV.

REFUGEES

Once, a strong economy, Zimbabwe today is practically a failed state. As a result many thousands have left the country to earn money in other countries. Once there, they are often abused in the host countries, such as Qatar, where they work and often are not paid and then threatened with deportation if they complain.
