CORRUPTION

After almost 90 years of power by one party – this control ended in 2002 -   corruption is very deeply engrained in every aspect of the country, from politics to law enforcement, and may well be the single greatest factor in releasing the huge potential Mexico has to be a leading country on the world stage.

EDUCATION

Poverty is a direct function of lack of education. The divide between the “haves” and “have nots,” continues to grow. Millions throughout the country are in desperate need of education.

ENVIRONMENT

Problems include scarcity of hazardous waste disposal facilities, rural to urban migration, natural fresh water resources being scarce and polluted in the north. There is poor air quality in the center and extreme southeast. Raw sewage and industrial effluents are polluting rivers in urban areas. Deforestation; widespread erosion; desertification; deteriorating agricultural lands; as well as serious air and water pollution in the national capital and urban centers along the US-Mexico border. There is also land subsidence in the Valley of Mexico caused by groundwater depletion.

HUMAN RIGHTS

Mexico’s justice system is notorious for corruption and the result is many thousands who are held in jail without having received fair trials or sentencing. The power generated by the narco economy has led to a wide range of human rights abuse both by the drug lords and the government.
