Corruption breeds more corruption. In Cambodia, politicians and civil servants erode law and justice. This corruption has a direct and powerful effect on economic growth and education, which are cornerstones of a healthy and vibrant society.

Cambodia suffers from deforestation; soil erosion; desertification; water pollution and pollution from oil production wastes. High use of pesticides has lead to imbalances in natural species and growing disease levels as bats and other predators diminish.

HUMAN RIGHTS

The most serious human rights abuse in the country is land seizures that lead to evictions and homelessness. The courts are politicized and corrupt, and human rights violations are the norm. Land is being seized for logging, agriculture, mining, tourism and fisheries, and in Phnom Penh, soaring land prices have touched off a frenzy of land grabs by the rich and powerful. Sometimes shanty neighborhoods burn down, apparently victims of arson.
