Subject: Truth and Reconciliation in the Middle East
Dear former President Mandela,
You were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime, and for laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa. In your acceptance speech you eloquently stated: “We understand their call, that we devote what remains of our lives to the use of our country's unique and painful experience to demonstrate, in practice, that the normal condition for human existence is democracy, justice, peace, non-racism, non-sexism, prosperity for everybody, a healthy environment and equality and solidarity among the peoples.”
It is for this reason that we appeal to you to help President Obama attain his goal of peace in the Middle East. President Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize as a symbol of his message for change and hope for what he can achieve. .There is arguably no more important place where he can justify this honor than by accomplishing peace between two proud nations: the Israelis and the Palestinians.
As Einstein so aptly put it and as you know so well, “you can’t solve problems with the same thinking that created them.” A two state solution has been presented as the solution for peace between Israelis and Palestinians since the day the State of Israel was created. It didn’t work then and it will only work now if you add the essential component of forgiveness.
You know personally, the importance of consistent presence and dialogue. You embody the power of forgiveness in reaching true reconciliation. In the spirit of your accomplishments in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, the Power of Peace respectfully asks that you join us in challenging President Obama, Prime Minister Netanyahu, Palestinian Authority Leader Abbas and Bishop Tutu to immediately convene a Truth and Reconciliation Commission in the Middle East.
In the same profoundly straightforward and honest way as happened in South Africa; the millions of Israeli Jews and Palestinians need to acknowledge each other’s suffering, admit to one another’s past transgressions and focus on forgiveness for the future.
Without forgiveness, there will continue to be begrudging negotiations subject to interpretation. Without forgiveness, when the first party makes a wrong turn, both sides will retreat to their rhetoric and history with neither side really believing that we each deserve dignity, a place to call our own and peace for our children.
A two-state solution in absence of true forgiveness will not bring real peace to the Middle East.
Please join us in our goal.
Yours truly,
Power of Peace
