Political Prisoners

Political Prisoners are defined as those people held in jail or otherwise detained because they hold or profess dissenting political beliefs. In general – with the exception of high profile examples such as Aung San Kyi in Burma, little is known about political prisoners.
They are most often arrested and jailed in secret and are often regular people who have simply decided to take a stand. Others are caught up in mass arrests and simply forgotten once they disappear. It is only by publicizing the repression, the repressed and those who defend them that political repression can be stopped. As a result, political names and numbers are hard to obtain.
