- Lights - Make sure that you turn off the lights when your not in the room.
- Screensavers - If your company always has to have their computers on you could set the screen saver to come on sooner and install Entropia or something so that it is at least doing something worthwhile why no one is using it.
- Recycle - Recyle cans, plastics and carboard
- Email - Use email rather than internal memos.
- Taps - Don't leave the tap running.
- Paper Recycling - Set up an office paper recycling scheme.
- Transport incentives - Try and persuade your employer to offer incentives if you take public transport.
- Toilets - Don't flush litter down the toilet.
- Carpool - See if more some friends or neighbors want to share lifts to work or school.
- Old milk cartons - Leave old milk cartons, or other containers, outside in the rain. When they are full, put some holes in the side and place them in your garden so that they water it without requiring you to use a hose.
- Hair - Let your hair dry naturally rather than using a dryer.
- Running - If you go for a jog in the park pick up litter on the way. Its a great way of working your legs and you help the environment at the same time.
- Tire pressure - Inflate your tires to the correct pressure. This can save up to 5% on your fuel bill
- Heavy loads - Remove unnecessary heavy loads from the trunk or roof - they make you use more fuel.
- Cards - If kids receive cards for birthdays, Christmas etc. get them to recycle the envelopes.
- Showers - When you have a shower have it with the heat down one level to save on the heating.
- Shopping - If you're out shopping, train yourself to take your own bags rather than keep using the stores own.
- Go Slower - Try and go 5mph slower, you won't get there any slower and you'll save on fuel.
- Meat - Eat less meat.
- When to tune up - Keep fuel consumption record (km/litre. When this average drops by 10-15% your car needs a tune up, which saves alot on fuel efficiency.
- Parking near the shops - Don't drive around and around until you find a parking place next to the entrance.
- Roof racks - Don't leave your roof rack on your car if you don't need it. It adds to the weight and reduces aerodynamics.
- Look ahead - While driving, the golden rule is to look well ahead and maintain steady speeds. Unnecessary accelerating and braking not only costs fuel but frayed nerves as well.
- Walk to school - If you walk your child to school, ask other parents if they want to walk with you rather than drive their kids to school.
- Holiday Shopping - When on holiday try and shop at the local store rather than at the big megastore.
- Working holidays - Don't just lie on a beach for a week. There are numerous working holidays where you can make a difference. Building a dry stone wall or helping to plant a forest is an excellent way to get fit and you'll go home with a feel-good glow.
- Wildlife gardens - Does your school have a wildlife garden or conservation area? If not, suggest one. Maybe you can help build it.
- House colors - Paint your home a light color if you live in a warm climate and a dark color if you live in a cold climate.
- Water flow restrictors - Install flow restrictor aerators inside all taps for a savings of 3 to 4 gallons per minute
- Native Gardening - Fill your garden with native plants. This will cut down significantly on watering requirements and, in the process, provide much needed food and shelter to local wildlife.
- Crockery - Ask co-workers to bring their unwanted cups, mugs, plates, cloth napkins, and silverware to work to replace disposable items in the break-room
- Stuff your fridge - Keeping your fridge or freezer full will reduce your energy use by about 20 watts per appliance per year. Fill up empty spaces with carrier bags full of polystyrene. Never slam the fridge door or leave open for more than a few seconds.
