About

There are 6 billion people in the world. According to Freedom House.org,  5 billion of those live in countries where Press Freedom is regulated or severely regulated. This marks the sixth year in a row that Press Freedoms have declined,

So far, in 2009, 19 journalists have been killed. Press Freedom, like the taking of Political Prisoners, is a corrosive action that while it doesn’t include large numbers has a disproportionately large impact. Opressive governments fear open press more than any other single factor. When the press is muzzled, the forces for change and honesty loses their most formidable platform.

GOAL: Distribute 5000 megaphones in 10 selected countries, to politically active groups and newspapers so they can stand up for their rights. We will also send megaphones to political leadership in these countries and ask them to give the megaphones to news organization across their country as an expression of their commitment to Press Freedom.

ACTION:

1. Buy megaphones and help us reach our goal of 5,000. $5 buys one megaphone, $50 buys 10 megaphones, $100 buys 20 megaphones, $500 buys 100 megaphones. Help us get to our goal of 5,000 so we can say it loud for press freedom around the world.

2.  Donate and help us reach our goal to buy 5,000 megaphones so we can say it loud for press freedom around the world. Just $5 buys us one megaphone. Take action now!

3. Sign up to personally deliver megaphones to one of the 10 selected countries. Be the person who delivers 1000s of megaphones to the UN Ambassador of a specific country. We need 10 volunteers. Email us at megaphones at the powerofpeace.com

A Personal Tribute to Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela: Happy 92nd Birthday

nelson_mandela_586.jpg
I was not yet born when Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment. I did not hear his name during my early childhood growing up under the apartheid regime. I was not sure why he was imprisoned in that tiny cell on Robben Island. And I did not know then, that one day, he would unequivocally be my hero. While I have not had the honor of meeting Nelson Mandela, he has been a powerful and real part of my life journey over the past 20 years. I am profoundly humbled by his capacity to forgive and deeply motivated by his spirit and strength.

MY HOPES AND DREAMS FOR THE NEW DECADE:

children's rights.jpg
I dream of a world where children everywhere will put their heads on their pillow at night and not worry about food, shelter or abuse. I hope President Obama finds his footing, plants his feet on the ground and earns his Nobel Peace prize. I dream of forgiveness and reconciliation between Jews and Arabs, Israelis and Palestinians. I hope the day comes when we recognize that cultures that repress women are almost uniformly impoverished and subject to disease, famine and war.
