About

The remote villages in the vast region of the Indian Himalayas are no longer able to maintain a sustainable living like they have for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years because of the changing face of the economy brought by the new roads, deforestation and other factors. The people of the community are equipped with transitioning to this new rural economy and are in danger of poverty and losing the younger generations who , in desparation, are starting to move out to cities in the the plains where life is even harder for them. Grade schools in the region are most well equipped to help transform the future generations plug into the changing economy and help them actually build a local economy that suits the local communities the best. A good education and targeted professional incentives, along with developing strong ties to their community would encourage the children to pursue higher education in areas most needed by the community; and later, provide much-needed professional services to their own local communities.
The Himalayan Education Foundation (HEF) carries out this mission though strategic and valuable educational and career incentives and community programs. Based in Peterborough, New Hampshire, U.S.A, HEF has supporters from around the world who volunteer their time in various HEF projects.
