About

In countries like India, China, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Pakistan, Afghanistan and more , it is common – percentages often run as high as 40-50% – for girls to be married at ages as young as 8 years old. Legend says that 1000 years ago, invaders raped unmarried Hindu girls or carried them off as booty, prompting Hindu communities to marry off their daughters almost from birth to protect them. Today, these invaders have been replaced by superstition: the local view that any girl reaching puberty without getting married will fall prey to sexual depredations, which ignores the fact that relations with young girls is depredation in itself. In Asian and African countries and India too, there is also the common belief that having sex with a "fresh" girl can cure syphilis, gonorrhea and other sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS.

GOAL: To send 10,000 dolls to Legislators in 10 countries and ask them to give the dolls to the young girls they are marrying off. Countries include: India, China, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan, Ethiopia, Yemen, Mali,  Mozambique, Uganda.

ACTION: Create your own POP page or if you are alread a member, join the "Dolls Instead of Husbands" group then:

1. Help us get 10,000 dolls to legislators in 10 countries named above and demand that they put them in the hands of the young girls. These girls are sometimes as young as 8 years old and should be sleeping with dolls not husbands. Email us to get your schools and organizations involved in helping us. All our dolls are bought from Fair Trade artisans and help sustain community development in poorer countries.

2. Donate so that we can reach our goal of getting 10,000 dolls into the hands of young girls who are being married off at ages as young as 8 years old.

3. Volunteer to deliver the dolls to UN Ambassadors of these countries. We need 10 volunteers so email us.

A Personal Tribute to Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela: Happy 92nd Birthday

I was not yet born when Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment. I did not hear his name during my early childhood growing up under the apartheid regime. I was not sure why he was imprisoned in that tiny cell on Robben Island. And I did not know then, that one day, he would unequivocally be my hero. While I have not had the honor of meeting Nelson Mandela, he has been a powerful and real part of my life journey over the past 20 years. I am profoundly humbled by his capacity to forgive and deeply motivated by his spirit and strength.

MY HOPES AND DREAMS FOR THE NEW DECADE:

I dream of a world where children everywhere will put their heads on their pillow at night and not worry about food, shelter or abuse. I hope President Obama finds his footing, plants his feet on the ground and earns his Nobel Peace prize. I dream of forgiveness and reconciliation between Jews and Arabs, Israelis and Palestinians. I hope the day comes when we recognize that cultures that repress women are almost uniformly impoverished and subject to disease, famine and war.
