Opitagua was formed in July 2008, when nine women and two men came together to create a sustainable source of income for themselves. The entrepreneurs taught themselves a craft process using natural and local materials in order to engage in economic development and provide their families with a higher standard of living. The members of this group are all internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have no other means of income and who suffer the vulnerabilities of IDP life daily. The Opitagua enterprise trains new members in merchandising, communications, sales and other business skills so that the income generation project can be expanded and can positively impact more families in the community. The purchase of local tagua seeds as raw materials also contributes to important socioeconomic goals by extending income generation opportunity to other marginalized populations of the community, such as tagua harvesters.
