A Victory for Domestic Workers

Domestic workers -- nannies, housekeepers, and caregivers -- are some of the most exploited workers in the world. But a new international treaty has been adopted to help protect them, thanks in part to 10 years of Human Rights Watch research and advocacy. The treaty is the first of its kind. The 50 to 100 million domestic workers worldwide often face a range of abuses, from long working hours with no days off to sexual harassment or violence from their employers. Many work for months without getting paid, or are not paid at all.

Dec 12, 2010 (Jakarta) - Many governments' immigration policies and protection gaps expose migrants to abuse, Human Rights Watch said in a report today in advance of International Migrants Day, December 18, 2010. October 1,2010 - (London) - The UK government should publicly call on Nepal's chief of army staff, Gen. Chhatraman Gurung, to ensure that the army cooperates with investigations into crimes committed during Nepal's armed conflict, Human Rights Watch said today. In particular, the UK government should press General Gurung, to order the immediate transfer of Maj. Niranjan Basnet, charged with the 2004 murder of 15-year-old Maina Sunuwar, into police custody to ensure that he is held accountable through civilian criminal proceedings, Human Rights Watch said.

A Personal Tribute to Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela: Happy 92nd Birthday

I was not yet born when Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment. I did not hear his name during my early childhood growing up under the apartheid regime. I was not sure why he was imprisoned in that tiny cell on Robben Island. And I did not know then, that one day, he would unequivocally be my hero. While I have not had the honor of meeting Nelson Mandela, he has been a powerful and real part of my life journey over the past 20 years. I am profoundly humbled by his capacity to forgive and deeply motivated by his spirit and strength.
