A Victory for Domestic Workers

Domestic workers -- nannies, housekeepers, and caregivers -- are some of the most exploited workers in the world. But a new international treaty has been adopted to help protect them, thanks in part to 10 years of Human Rights Watch research and advocacy. The treaty is the first of its kind. The 50 to 100 million domestic workers worldwide often face a range of abuses, from long working hours with no days off to sexual harassment or violence from their employers. Many work for months without getting paid, or are not paid at all.

A Personal Tribute to Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela: Happy 92nd Birthday

nelson_mandela_586.jpg
I was not yet born when Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment. I did not hear his name during my early childhood growing up under the apartheid regime. I was not sure why he was imprisoned in that tiny cell on Robben Island. And I did not know then, that one day, he would unequivocally be my hero. While I have not had the honor of meeting Nelson Mandela, he has been a powerful and real part of my life journey over the past 20 years. I am profoundly humbled by his capacity to forgive and deeply motivated by his spirit and strength.

Our goal is to begin by telling their story. Recently, we've been working extensively with Invisible Children, raising money to build schools for rehabilitated child soldiers and aiding initiatives to end the civil war in Uganda.  Isipho was co-founded by 13-year-old Miranda Lynch and her father so that Miranda could do everything possible to improve the lives of children in Nzinga, South Africa. Chronic malnutrition and illiteracy are an overwhelming problem in Nzinga, leading to extreme poverty and dependence. Isipho provides gardening training through a partnership with Cedara College of Agriculture, fencing, tools and seeds so that villagers can begin to grow their own vegetables. Additionally, they provide books, educational supplies and teacher training for the schools. Isipho is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Orphans of Rwanda, Inc. (ORI) is dedicated to providing university scholarships to talented orphans and socially vulnerable young people in Rwanda, enabling them to pursue their highest ambitions and ultimately become leaders in driving their country’s growth and reconciliation. We currently support 175 students who have overcome incredible challenges and are united by a desire to improve their lives and create meaningful change in Rwanda’s economy and society. ORI was founded in 2004, and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.     LOG IN TO  VOTE... If you are already registered on POP then LOG IN.
