November 29, 2010 - (Cairo) - Elections to Egypt's People's Assembly on November 28, 2010, were marred by reports that opposition supporters were barred from polling stations and subjected to violence, Human Rights Watch said today. There were reports of numerous irregularities including arrests and harassment of journalists, denial of access for opposition candidate representatives to 30 polling stations visited by Human Rights Watch across the country and widespread allegations of voter fraud.

The evidence suggests that the Kremlin-appointed leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, was involved in the fatal attempted kidnapping in 2009 of a Chechen refugee in Vienna, Human Rights Watch said.

While the first round of elections took place in June in relative calm, the run-off election will take place amid heightened ethnic and political tensions.

October 22 2010 - (Dakar) - Well-armed criminal gangs in western Côte d'Ivoire subject local residents to a relentless stream of abuses, including assault, robbery, and sexual violence, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. The Ivorian authorities, who have failed to prevent or respond to the violence, should undertake patrols in hard-hit areas, investigate and prosecute crimes, and punish members of security forces who have failed to protect the population.
