Aung San Suu Kyi

Times like the holidays always make me really appreciate Aung San Suu Kyi. She is such an amazing person, so strong, and brave. As it is said in the U2 song, Walk On, written about Aung San Kyi, "You're packing your suitcase for a place none of us has been. A place that has to be believed to be seen." She has been fighting for decades for freedom, justice and peace, under the ever watchful eye of the military government. "Home, hard to know what it is if you've never had one." She lives under house arrest, hardly ever leaving the small building she has been confined to all these years, yet her impact is worldwide. It is her passion, her heart, and her perserverence that inspires us all. As my family and I sat around the Christmas tree, as my best friends and I danced with sparklers under the New Years Eve full moon, I wondered what she was doing at that moment. Maybe longing to escape, and to be free from the oppression. Maybe wishing that for others. But at those moments, I really felt connected to her struggles, and her love for her counrty and people. Stay strong, and don't give up!

"Walk on, walk on, what you got they can't steal it, no they can't even feel it. Walk on."
