Today, China wields as much military and economic muscle on the world stage as the United States and Russia, but the Power of Peace asserts that China’s most chilling power is its mismanagement of our environment.
The magnitude of China's environmental crisis would be monumental if it was simply limited to its own borders. But with the impact seeping deep into the planet’s oceans, floating through the world’s skies, and poisoning other populations, the crisis approaches epic proportions. And solving it requires new thought and new action.
First, let’s call this what it is: Global Human Rights Abuse. China’s pollution is as much a problem for soccer moms in Montana as it is for port workers in Mumbai. And while China spray paints its Olympic cities green, jails its protesters without due process and limits reporters and bloggers on a huge scale, the truth is undeniable.
- A World Bank Pollution Survey states: Sixteen of the world’s twenty most polluted cities are in China.
- The World Bank also estimates that 750,000 people die each year in China from pollution. Even Xinhua, China’s official news agency admits that more than 77 percent of Chinese coastal city sewer outlets discharge excessive amounts of pollutants into the sea.
- They announced that China surpassed the United States as the world's largest emitter of carbon dioxide
- Scientists like California professor Tom Cahill point to satellite photos that every winter show vast areas of China blanketed by a huge “brown cloud” that travels far afield, sometimes even reaching the US.
- Recent news articles point to another problem hidden for years: China exports it’s pollution by the shipload. Product, from lead painted children’s toys to fish and fowl raised on tainted food and water, from fake drugs to cosmetics laced with chemicals fill our shelves at home and in stores.
China is our issue, the earth’s issue, perhaps exceeding all others in magnitude and long-term impact. China’s repressed people cannot fix this. It is only in front of the world’s eyes, the world’s condemnation that China can be made to walk the walk.
The Chinese Olympics gives us our year of opportunity. The time to make a spectacular change in what China and other governments can get away with is now. Join us. Join the Power of Peace to know, to act, to change. |
